9mm for Self-Defense vs. Range: What to Actually Buy
Not all 9mm is interchangeable. What you shoot at the range and what you carry for defense are two different jobs, and the ammo built for each one is different too. Here's what FMJ versus JHP actually means, what those grain-weight numbers on the box tell you, when +P matters, and how to buy without overthinking it.
FMJ vs. JHP: two different jobs
Full metal jacket, FMJ, is a lead core wrapped in a copper jacket, round-nosed, built to feed reliably and cost less than defensive ammo. That makes it the right choice for practice: cheap enough to shoot in volume, and it cycles clean through pretty much any 9mm that's running right. The tradeoff is that FMJ doesn't expand. It punches a straight hole and tends to keep traveling, which means it can over-penetrate a target and whatever's behind it. Fine for a berm at the range. Not what you want for a defensive round in your home or on the street.
Jacketed hollow point, JHP, is built to do the opposite job. The hollow cavity in the nose is designed to expand on impact, which slows the round and is intended to limit penetration compared to FMJ of the same weight. That's the design goal: controlled terminal performance instead of a bullet that just keeps going. JHP costs more than FMJ, and how well a given load expands depends on barrel length, velocity, and what it hits. But the intent is defense, not high-volume range time.
- FMJ: cheap, feeds reliably, doesn't expand, higher over-penetration risk. Practice ammo.
- JHP: expands, built for controlled penetration, costs more. Carry ammo.
Grain weight: what the number means
In 9mm you'll mostly see 115, 124, and 147 grain loads on the shelf. Grain is just the weight of the bullet. Lighter, faster loads — often 115 grain — tend to feel snappier and can throw a bit more muzzle flash, while heavier 147 grain loads usually feel more like a push. Just know that flash and recoil come down as much to how hot a load is built (its powder and pressure) as to bullet weight — two different 115 grain loads can feel quite different. 124 grain sits in the middle and is a common default for both range and duty loads.
No single grain weight is universally better. It's about how a given load's recoil and point of impact feel in your specific gun, and, for defensive ammo, how that load's JHP design performs in the testing you trust. If you practice with 115 grain FMJ, don't assume your 147 grain JHP carry round will hit the same point of aim or feel the same in your hand. It might not, and that's exactly why testing your carry ammo matters.
+P: read your gun before you read the box
+P means the ammunition is loaded to higher pressure than standard 9mm, usually for more velocity. Some shooters prefer +P for defensive carry. But +P is only safe to run in a firearm the manufacturer has actually rated for it, and not every 9mm is rated for +P. Check your barrel markings and your owner's manual before you buy or fire any +P ammunition. If your gun isn't rated for it, don't run it. Standard-pressure ammo is the safe default when you're not sure.
The actual buying pattern
Most people who carry a 9mm end up buying two different things, and that's normal, not overkill.
Before you trust any carry ammo with your life, run a few boxes of it through your own gun. Confirm it feeds, ejects, and cycles without a hiccup. A load that's well regarded on paper is worthless to you if your specific pistol doesn't run it clean. Test it, then carry it.
- Practice ammo: FMJ, in whatever grain weight your gun runs cleanly and affordably in volume. This is where you get your trigger time.
- Carry ammo: a quality JHP in a grain weight your gun handles well, in enough quantity to load your carry gun and any spare mags.
